Chapter 29: Pints and Bitters

Old Levi drained the rest of the ale in Mary’s jug and looked at them expectantly.

"Uh," Cid said. "Good work, Levi."

"Thanks. You’re happy with it?"

"Thrilled." He was already thinking about that tub and how good it would feel to soak in it later. And the ice box was a huge improvement, as was the stove. He wouldn’t have to cook everything over an open flame anymore. Life was good.

"Well," the merchant said. "If you don’t want to buy anything else—"

"I think I’m tapped out," Cid said, turning his pockets inside out. They were empty. He had more gold in his pack, but not all that much.

"I’ll be off then," Levi said, moving toward his cart. "Hope you like everything you bought."

He drew the fabric back over the pile of appliances and strapped it down. Then, he tossed his long beard over one shoulder and hopped into the driver’s seat. The pony pricked up its ears expectantly when Old Levi took the reins as if it knew it was about to head home for a bucket of oats.

"Thanks, Levi," Cid said. "Truly. It’s been a big help."

"No problem."

And with that, the old man was off, bells jingling merrily as the pony trotted down the road away from the farmhouse. They all watched him go from the porch. Then—

"I’m out too," Mary said. "Got a big day tomorrow at the brewery. Maggie’s making a fresh batch of her amber ale."

"You’ll have to save me some," Edd said, mounting his horse. "I’m out all day on a project. Replacing all the doors in Old Miss Jade’s house. Boring but lucrative."

One by one, they all dispersed, leaving Daryl and Cid alone on the porch. The old man peered into the woods, shading his eyes from the setting sun.

"Where’s that damn boy?" he asked. "He’s been gone for hours. And he missed dinner. I’ll have to find him something to eat now."

They saw a flash of red in the distance coming their way at high speed, and Daryl relaxed. "There he is."

Lyle was galloping toward them like a horse, and they tried not to laugh as they watched him approach.

"You think he’s been running like that all day?" Cid asked.

Daryl shrugged. "Who knows?"

"Did you get everything fixed?" the lad asked when he got to the porch. "In the house, I mean?"

Cid nodded.

"Great. Can we go home now?"

"Sure can." Daryl laughed. "Cid Dawnshield, you want to come with us?"

"Uh." That hot bath was calling his name.

"Come back to town. It’s been a hard day, and your barn just collapsed. Let’s go have a drink."

Hm. The hot bath did sound good, but a cold pint of ale in a warm tavern also sounded good. Maybe he’d still have time for the tub afterward.

"Alright," Cid said. "Maybe just one."

"Cid’s coming to our house?!" Lyle asked.

Daryl laughed. "No, lad. Cid’s coming with me to the pub. You’ll go stay with Karl."

"But I hate Karl."

"You don’t hate Karl. Remember when you two spent the whole day chasing sheep?"

"Yeah.
